DOT and Non-DOT Drug Testing

We offer drug testing for industries both regulated and unregulated by the Department of Transportation (DOT). These drug tests can be performed for pre-employment, post-accident, or anything else required for your place of employment

A Urine Sample is often needed for drug testing

What is DOT and Non-DOT Drug Testing?

What is a DOT drug test?

A DOT drug test is a drug test regulated by the Department of Transportation (DOT). They are administered to employees working in safety-sensitive occupations that are regulated by the DOT. For example, if your job requires a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) you will likely have to take a DOT-regulated drug test.

What is a Non-DOT drug test?

A Non-DOT drug test is a drug test authorized by your employer that is not regulated by the DOT. These tests are more variable, as they vary based on your state’s regulations. An employer might require these tests to ensure a drug-free work environment.

When is a drug test required?

The DOT has regulations that state that employees in regulated positions must take tests in the following situations:
  • As part of screening for pre-employment
  • Post-accident
  • Returning to work
  • During nontargeted random testing
  • Reasonable suspicion of drug use
Non-DOT drug tests may be requested by your employer for any of the above reasons as well, based on company policy.
DOT vs Non-DOT. The DOT has additional regulations for drug tests, which affect Commercial Drivers especially. DOT tests almost always use a urine sample.
